Cellphones

Received this in a recent email. Enjoy!

Travelling across highway 3 and needing to use the restroom,I stopped at a rest area and headed to therestroom.

I was barely sitting down when I heard a voice from the other stall saying:

"Hi, how are you?"

I'm not the type to start a conversation in the restroom and I don't know what got into me, but I answered, somewhat embarrassed,

"Doin' just fine!"

And the other person says:

"So what are you up to?"

What kind of question is that? At that point, I'm thinking this is too bizarre so I say:

"Uhhh, I'm like you, just traveling!"??

At this point I am just trying to get out as fast as I can when I hear another question.

"Can I come over?"

Ok, this question is just too weird for me but I figured I could just be polite and end the conversation. I told him

"No.I'm a little busy right now!!!"

Then I hear the person say nervously...

"Listen, I'll have to call you back. There's an idiot in the other stall who keeps answering all my questions."

Handsets

The once lowly cellphone has evolved into an almost all purpose mobile unit. I think people are accessing the non-cellphone functions such as email, games, surfing, GPS, and music than making calls. I could be way off base but watch it to replace the laptops and netbooks in the near future.

Emergency response

Came across this scene one evening. What happened was a car crashed into the retaining wall between the aluminum structure and the blue warehouse complex. It looked pretty serious as the front end of the vehicle had become accordion-like. Didn't stopped to take a picture. never know what the police will do to my cellphone.

Competition

Didn't realized the competition in the cellphone market has gone by a few notches until I saw this in one of the mall. Telus managed to have one of its huge ads hung directly behind a Solo booth which is owned by Bell. Wonder how much Telus had to pay for this arrangement.

Multi-tasking

Went to the Taiwanfest today. Was inside the cooking demonstration tent to snap a few pics of the chefs. Saw this lady with a cellphone in each hand. Sure enough she was using both of them simultaneously.

A new store

This new cellphones outlet opened in one of the malls I frequent. Initially thought it is a move by Rogers to counter Bell's Solo and the more recent Telus Koodoo maneuvers. Finally my curiosity got the better of me and I went in and inquired. As it turns out this is an independent dealer who sells plans from Rogers' competitors as well.

Beaver at work

This was an International News outlets doing what I considered brisk business. Either appearance is deceiving or the mall has jacked the rent high enough for the owner to deem continue operation inviable. Soon it'll be a Bell store selling handsets.

The question now becomes why is Bell opening another outlet in the mall given their existing one, see next photo, isn't exactly overwhelmed with customers.

Lost & found

When will people learn never, ever, leave anything of value in the car. The number of watches certainly caught my attention. Not too many people own this many watches. Also this person may be an older individual since today's young people rely on their cellphones or handsets rather than watches.

Me and my handset

<

Handsets are everywhere. It seems everybody has one. One of the most common sight is somebody walking yet the focus is on the screen of the cellphone in his/her hand. The most frighten sight is seeing people driving with their cellphones in front of them.

Display

Anybody wants to guess what this shop is selling? Don't you agree it is a very effective display for a cellphones retail outlet?

Motorola

Seeing these two on a bookcase sure triggered a trip down memory lane. At the time it was the state-of-the-art, a big step forward from its older sibling, the brick, in terms of size, weight, and performance. It even had the capacity to store 10 phone numbers without names. It sure was fun in trying to recall whether Danny's number was stored in No. 7 or No. 8.

Battery life is another issue. Firstly, as an analog phone it drained the battery dry in no time. Consequently us, road rats, always carried a spare plus an automobile charger. Then there is the memory issue. Its capacity deteriorated over time. Every so often these batteries had to be reconditioned which only slowed not stopped the process.

Pay phones

In recent years cellphones had become so prevailing that telephone companies are seriously considering withdrawing from that segment of the market. It was a big surprise to see this bank of pay phone booths inside Metrotown. These belong to Bell may be the explanation for this unexpected because Bell is fighting Telus for market shares in Telus' home turf, no less.
